MySQL -Dovecot error

I am running Ubuntu 18.04 and I am having trouble getting dovecot to work with mysql. I get the errors below when I run systemctl status dovecot.service.
auth-worker(27160): Warning: mysql: Query failed, retrying: Unknown column 'maildir_format' in 'field list'
auth-worker(27160): Error: sql(koot@co.ug,212.70.149.2): Password query failed: Unknown column 'maildir_format' in 'field list'
When I check the database table mail_user the field maildir_format exists with defined entry maildir. I'm not sure where else to look. Please help me out with this
