Initializing a field with system_user()

Is there a way to default a field to system_user() or substring_index(system_user(),'@',1)
When I put it in the Default field, it puts marks around it: 'SYSTEM_USER()' and inserts the literal text 'SYSTEM_USER()' instead of the actual user name.
