Don't panic.
Set-based SQL is simply the likes of SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE, plus the more "interesting" update constructs offered by each DBMS (like Oracle's MERGE statement).
As soon as you start trying to force things to work row-by-row, with cursors and the like, you will cripple your DBMS.
