On giving this further thought, I realized that (in my case, at least) this is Linux writing to memory, in order to cache writes that may (or so it thinks) need to be accessed. Given how mysqldump works, what with all the SELECT/ROLLBACK cycles, I imagine that's quite a bit of memory writing.
I'm now looking at my issue as a monitoring question: Given that the free command gives back uninteresting information, how do I monitor a system's memory usage?
