I thought I'd mention that I put a space after -u like all of the time and haven't had issues with it. Where it really makes a difference is after -p, if you want to specify a password on the command line and not be prompted.

I suspect something is up with the grant tables. Might want to do a cleanout of the mysql/data directory then run scripts/mysql_install_db.
