Is your password 'xyz' or just xyz

If your password doesn't have the quotes, then don't put them there

mysql -u root -pxyz
And like the warning says, don't put the password on the command line. The command line becomes the title of the cli window, and your password is there for anyone walking past to see.
Best to use
mysql -u root -p
and enter the password when requested.

Good luck,
Barry.
