Designing a scalable MySQL database for a healthcare website

Hello everyone,

I'm working on the database architecture for a healthcare website and would like to get some advice from experienced MySQL users.

The website needs to manage different types of structured information, such as departments, doctors, services, appointments, and general website content. I'm considering MySQL for the database layer and want to make sure the schema remains efficient as the amount of data grows.

A few things I'm particularly interested in:

How should related entities such as departments, doctors, and services be structured?
What indexing strategy would you recommend for frequently searched records?
Are there any common database-design mistakes I should avoid when building a healthcare-related website?
What are the recommended approaches for maintaining database performance as the number of records increases?
Would you recommend any particular backup and recovery strategy for this type of application?

I'd appreciate advice from anyone who has worked with MySQL databases for content-heavy or service-based websites.

Thanks in advance.
