Re: Designing a scalable MySQL database for a healthcare website
For this type of application, I would start with a normalized schema and keep the main entities separate. For example, departments, doctors, services, and appointments can each have their own tables, with foreign keys used for their relationships.
For indexing, focus on the columns that are actually used in WHERE, JOIN, and ORDER BY clauses. For example, appointment searches might benefit from indexes on the doctor, department, and appointment date. Avoid adding indexes to every column, as they also increase storage and write overhead.
As the database grows, regularly check slow queries with EXPLAIN and EXPLAIN ANALYZE, and review the indexes based on actual query patterns rather than guessing.
For backups, I would use automated regular backups along with binary logs if point-in-time recovery is required. Most importantly, test restoring the backups periodically. A backup that has never been tested is not something I would rely on for recovery.
Please let me know if you require any additional details or have any queries about my explanation.
