altering table

hi,
I have a query regarding updation of a table.
Suppose a mysql table contains many records.Now, that table is altered (suppose a new column is added) . Then various other records are added also in the table. What would be the value of that column of the previous recprds? does it contain NULL? or exactly what value is stored for the previous records.
I will be very grateful if anyone help me to get out of this problem
