Re: MySQL Error Number 1045 Access denied

I'm having a problem setting my root password on OSX Tiger server. I've tried setting it through phpMyAdmin and MySQL Administrator. However, whenever a password is set I get this error:
#1045 - Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)

But if I leave the password blank, phpMyAdmin displays this error:
Your configuration file contains settings (root with no password) that correspond to the default MySQL privileged account. Your MySQL server is running with this default, is open to intrusion, and you really should fix this security hole.

How/where do I set it to look for a password?
