My apologies. At some point I've managed to turn the '0' into a '1' (my install folder is called 4.1.20!) and it sort of stuck. Doh! The returned string from show variables like 'version' is 4.0.20a-debug.
So according to the roadmap I need 4.1.x as it is 4.1 that supports subqueries.
Apologies for wasting everyone's time. I'll upgrade to 4.1 and take it from there.
