What happens if someone inserts data into a table that your view is based on? You can actually insert, delete and update some views so it can't be static in the way you are thinking about it. I might get corrected on this but, in general, a view is mostly a way to alter the presentation of data to users.

Also, as I understand it, mostly from what I just read :), the Query Optimizer is smarter when you query the data directly rather than through a view and especially so in the case of joins. This PDF does a better job than I ever would of explaining it. Look for the part on joins.
