table missing from different OS installs

I have installed MySQL 5.1 on Windows and 5.0.45 on CentOS. However, the Windows information Schema database contains 28 tables of which one is global_variables. However the CentOS install (using the YUM installer) only contains 17 tables and the global_variables table is missing or not visible. Is this just the difference between the OS installs? I was looking for the global_variables table to verify the tables to lower case option was enabled.
