A problem with charater set

Hi, everyone.
I am a student from China(Chinese mainland, not Taiwan,or Hongkong or Macao) and currently developing a gui application using java and mysql, the communication between the gui application and mysql server(the server is 4.1.7-nt) is based on the connector/j jdbc driver. But when I retrieve some Chinese character from the database and display those data on my gui, all those data become a pile of trash, not readable to the human being. I had attempted to modify the default-character-set entry in the my.ini file to utf8 and gbk, but all those attempt do nothing. What should I do to solve this problem. Many thanks!
