Chacacter set changes the BLOB?

e.g., Before I upload a BLOB to DB, I set "set character set sjis", and my DB is using utf8 default. Then error occurs, if I don't set anything, then it is OK. And, if I set "set character set utf8", I can upload a BLOB to DB too. Could anyone give some advice about this? Thanks.
