Japanese Encoding

Hi, I am having trouble viewing the correct Japanese characters in my browser in Linux. I have set up my application and database in both Linux and Windows using Java, MySQL, Tomcat and Eclipse.

From Windows, when I connect to the local database, the Japanese characters are shown properly but when I try to access the database in Linux from Windows, I see gibberish.

On the other hand, from Linux, when i connect to the local database, I see gibberish but when I try to connect to the Windows database, I see the Japanese characters correctly.

Because of this, I assumed the problem lies with MySQL. I have tried changing the character sets and collation in Linux from latin1 to utf8 but the problem is still there.

Moreover, when I try to view table data in the mysql client from Linux and Windows, I see the correct Japanese characters. Any help about this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.
