When converting Unicode to or from some variants of Japanese
character sets, occasional small difficulties might occur.
The MySQL Reference Manual has a section
"MySQL 5.1 FAQ — MySQL Chinese, Japanese, and Korean Character Sets"
with the details. But in general we recommend Unicode.
