You didn't say what happens if you don't use Java.
I'll assume that everything looks okay in the mysql
client utility, and I'll assume that you selected
the hex value of the character to be sure it's a
Unicode value. If so, the next thing to look at is
Java settings. Read the MySQL manual starting with
"24.4.4.4. Using Character Sets and Unicode"
