Peter, thank you for your reply. Will you confirm a few things for me, please?

I have looked at the Unicode collation chart for Latin characters here: http://unicode.org/charts/collation/chart_Latin.html

Scroll down to LATIN SMALL LETTER H and you'll see that this character is listed as having a 'tertiary difference' to LATIN SMALL LETTER H WITH STROKE (the Maltese character ħ).

So, in MySQL, when I execute the following query:

SELECT 'ħ' = 'h' COLLATE utf8_unicode_ci;

Why do I get the result '0'?
