Brooks. "expansions" is a different thing. You're talking about accent sensitivity.
According to our experience, accent insensitive collation IS generally desired.
This is why we implemented our first Unicode collations this way.
However, I agree, it can be usefull to have accent sensitive collations for some applications.
We will NOT fix utf8_general_ci. As I wrote in my reply in another thread, we
have accent sensitive collations on our TODO. They will be separate collations.

To be able to answer about 'like', I'll need examples when like works differently than '='.
