There must be a way. It may involve creating another column and using select/insert/update to copy the values from one column to another. Possibly a cast would be needed. Possibly the extra column would be a BLOB (or VARBINARY) and it would take two copies. Also there is ALTER TABLE ... CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET ... Sorry, I don't have the energy to figure it out. Glad you got your data fixed.
