I just found a little more info

a MySQL discussion from 2002!
http://lists.mysql.com/mysql/114764

the gist of the email says this
I see the problem is with sql/share/charsets/latin1.conf
because German umlaut 'ü' and 'Ü' is mapped to 59 'Y' in the
sort_order array. This is very much unlike the treatment
for the other umlauts ('ä' --> 5C and 'ö' --> 5D)

sure enough I to find "Hüsker Dü" I did a search for "hysker" and it WORKED!

this is a bug in the character set it seems.
anyone know if there is a way around this so I can LIKE will find "Hüsker Dü" by searching for "husker"?

thanks
