4.1, connection strings and table charsets

Hi, I'm using Mysql 4.1 and coldfusion mx 6.1 on windows.
When using the connection string:
useUnicode=true&characterEncoding=utf8
I'm able to pass data in and out in any language without any problems. It works like a charm. That's the part I don't understand. Does it mean that the default charset for mysql 4.1 tables actually IS utf8?
Am I am missing something?
