Thanks very much for your explanation. I looked around a lot on this site and with google etc and could find no explanation at all - this is the first (I read the unicode section of online manual carefully, used the search ... nothing ... can't even find documentation of what "set names" does!)
It was just one line on someone's weblog that helped me find the bug. It cost me more than a day of hunting.
So yes, this should DEFINITELY be on the unicode page of the manul somewhere.
I'll file a bug report.
