ok i've upgraded my package to 5.0.15 and i'm still getting that error. if i do ./mysqladmin --help, it shows that there is no default character set. if i do ./mysql --help, it shows that the default character set is latin1, which is the value that the client keeps getting set to. i don't know if this would affect it or not, but i would have thought that the global value would override the clients default value?
