Thank you for the reply, Rick. Your document is very informative and will definitely help when we go to take the data out of our legacy DB into a new system. It is possible people entering or contributing did have other character sets set as their default on their machines when they created their bio's.
The data itself is formatted text of varied lengths containing biographical data about people. It may contain bullets and other special characters. That seems like a good candidate for the blob data type.
Hopefully others will read the post and get some good out of it. Based on my searches, this appears to be an issue a fair number of people have run into and many of the posts seem to be unanswered. None of them had the good background of the document at your link.
