ok, disregard - i did import the data initially with the mysql cli and didn't do a
SET NAMES utf8 and SET CHARACTER SET utf8.
So the colums where declared as utf8 but the data was pushed in as latin1 - that
didn't work out when the php frontend used utf8 to match up things.
Hope that helps someone else ;)
