Encryption Functions work diffrently in V5.0?

I'm trying to migrate my V4.0.18 MYSQL DB to V5.0 but have noticed that the following simple query returns diffrent result for each MYSQL version:
select md5('<A string that contains Hebrew characters>')
What might be the reason for that?
P.S. When the string contains only english characters and numbers, the result is the same for both versions.
