Thanks for your inciteful post. You're right, of course- this is the best way I've seen to implement a solution to this problem. Even my 携帯 uses this method to sort users in the address book. Like the FileMaker example you cite, it automatically updates the kana field as I enter a name. I'll add this solution to my system when I get the chance.
Are you developing software in Tokyo? I've been working down by 品川 for a year or so .
