I don't know if you got anywhere with this, but I had the exact same problem, and found that it was because SQL Express 2005 hadn't been set up with the TCP/IP port number by default.

SQL Server Configuration Manager >
SQL Server 2005 Network configuration >
Protocols for SQLEXPRESS >
TCP/IP >
Properties >
IP Addresses>
TCP Port

This was blank to start with, I changed it to 1433 (default port), restarted the service, and I was able to connect.
