how to upgrade the mysql version 5.5.x

i'm use Windows XP

previously I was using mysql version 5.0, and already 3 years I used it. but I want to update the latest version of mysql.

I've installed mysql version 5.5.x, I try to copy the data folder (mysql version 5.0) and paste it in the folder data (mysql version 5.5) but when I open the database management was not detected.

how to migrate the data?
