If your "copy" included the mysql directory, then that is probably the problem. Remedy...

1. Rename the main directory (.../mysql/data) to save it.
2. Reinstall MySQL -- this will create a fresh mysql/data/mysql/
3. move the rest of the files/directories back in.
4. Re-establish any logins you had. (They were lost in steps 1, 2.)

The problem: Significant changes happened in /mysql between those versions.
