How was the .bak file created? A lot of utilities create files with the .bak suffix; mysql is not one of them. Something else did that.
Is it only one file?
If you are on Un*x, do
file filename
to see what it thinks is in it.
If it says "ascii" or "text", do
head filename
and present it to us for analysis.
