ah ha! i figured it out when i started w/ the command line opt.

when i typed MySQLMigrationTool.exe - verbose, and XP told me that it couldn't find it, i started to suspect that something was misconfigured not w/ Java but w/ the Migration tool.
yet, i decided one last try that perhaps i was misspelling the word (as i am known to do), so i went to:
Start>MySQL>MigrationToolkit>Properties: to copy the shortcut name from there. to my surprise, that didn't work either! so, i put the entire address from the shortcut into a folder to browse to it... and when nothing was found i remembered that my MySQL installation is NOT under c:\program files\ as the shortcut was pointing to, but instead, under the old-school directory c:\MySQL\

i'm shocked that anything happened at ALL when i tried running it from the shortcut before!

well, now it is working fine. thank you!!

while i have your attention, however, may i ask if you know anything about the problem i had w/ the MySQL Administrator-- the question i sort of tagged at the bottom of this issue?

thanks!!!
