Moving to MySQL5 without mysqldump

Mysqldump always takes ages....

Therefore I have always preferred just tar-ing the var/mysql/the-database directory and copying to the new/other mysql server.

So far it always worked, even if there were different MySQL versions on the servers.

What about the new MySQL5 that supports Views?

Would it also work or is there a theoretical reason why it can not possibly work
to just copy the database directory over to the new server?

Cheers!
