Well, one path you might choose is
Excel -> Access (Use import of XLS file, which pops up the "Import speardsheet Wizard" -> MT to MySQL
Another would be to export the Excel to XML or CSV and find a proper tool to convert from these formats to MySQL (Dunno them however).
The only advantage from Excel->Access migration is that often Access is used as an "upgrade" for complicated spreadsheet handling and as such the tools supplied in access deal pretty well with Excel stuff.
If you feel like programming you could always use MS's Excel ODBC driver directly...
