Solution found.
Modern Linux clients identifies the NetApp .snapshot directory as a different filesystem, and thus as a different mount point
Starting with ONTAP 9.5 it is possible to hide the .snapshot directory from enumeration in NFSv3. See NetApp site for commands.
Another solution I read from an AI site is to put all data into a sub directory that does not have the .snapshot folder. Seems like a very simple solution. Data should still get snap saved.
