Federated = MySQL 2 MySQL?

Can federated tables be used to sync between MySQL and Oracle or is this a MySQL to MySQL thing only?
Any ideas how I would sync between MySQL and Oracle? I want to write a trigger and call a Java method from the trigger, but that does not seem possible.
