Alternatives to federated tables

Federated tables is a good idea, but it has too many shortcommings and errors. Lately I discovered that LEFT JOIN does not work with federated tables.

Are there any good alternatives.

MySQL has a replication feature. If that could be extended, so I could pin point one table to be replicated.
I know that this is possible - however I already run a master master replication on the server(s) that needs the federaded table.

A storage engine that looks into the binlog on a master machine, would do exactly what I need.
