FWIW, we intend to give large-scale partitioning a shot in a production environment next month. We handle about 3 million transactions/day, and we have over a year's worth of historical data to wrestle with. We figured it was worth giving MySQL a shot at this job before ponying up big $$ for the SQL Server version that supports partitioning.

I've been tracking the release reports for the last few releases of MySQL 5.1, and I'm not seeing a lot of fixes in the partitioning code, so that has given me the courage to try it.

I would sure like to see partition pruning via the MONTHS function, though! Then we could partition by YEARS, then subpartition by MONTHS. I can't imagine how that use case didn't make it into the 5.1 planning!
