For maintenance and performance reasons. Storage becomes an issue after a while and you can quite easily drop a partition without bringing the whole server to a halt. You should also get better performance by querying less data and also by moving the different partitions to different disks. I know it's not recommended but you could also utilize different storage engines in the different partitions...but we probably wont do this for a while though.
