NULLs are put into the _first_ partition. (Yeah, you said NOT NULL; I suspect that is a bug.)

The 'approved workaround' is to have a dummy _first_ partition. In your case, it would contain dates older than anything you have, so the partition would be empty. Then, the cost of the wasted search of the _first_ partition would be small.

Mattias, can you weigh in on what I am saying?

Andrew; I am ignorant of LOCAL in Oracle -- what does it imply? And what is the opposite of LOCAL?
