can't create partitioning table

i'm using mysql5.1, check 'show plugs', it has partitioning as active, variable have_partitioning is YES. so i assumed partitioning is enabled.

say i used the following scrip to create a table:
CREATE TABLE t1 (
fname VARCHAR(50) NOT NULL,
lname VARCHAR(50) NOT NULL,
region_code TINYINT UNSIGNED NOT NULL,
dob DATE NOT NULL
)
PARTITION BY RANGE( region_code ) (
PARTITION p0 VALUES LESS THAN (64),
PARTITION p1 VALUES LESS THAN (128),
PARTITION p2 VALUES LESS THAN (192),
PARTITION p3 VALUES LESS THAN MAXVALUE
);

table is created. but when i checked DDL, it is

CREATE TABLE `t1` (
`fname` varchar(50) NOT NULL,
`lname` varchar(50) NOT NULL,
`region_code` tinyint(3) unsigned NOT NULL,
`dob` date NOT NULL
) ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1
/*!50100 PARTITION BY RANGE ( region_code)
(PARTITION p0 VALUES LESS THAN (64) ENGINE = MyISAM,
PARTITION p1 VALUES LESS THAN (128) ENGINE = MyISAM,
PARTITION p2 VALUES LESS THAN (192) ENGINE = MyISAM,
PARTITION p3 VALUES LESS THAN MAXVALUE ENGINE = MyISAM) */;

tested a query, partition pruning didn't work at all. any ideas?

Thanks.
