We're not currently doing any work on vertical partitioning that I'm aware of.
You can always split a table to achieve a similar performance gain, however.
My experience is that a table with a great number of columns very often indicates a need to further normalise the DB, but without seeing more, I can't say whether this might apply in your case. And if your schema is already normalised - well, I'm normally not a big fan of denormalisation, but this sounds like a case where it might be justified.
