Hi,

Hard to say without more information. Is it still creating temp tables if you remove the ORDER BY?

Can you add 'EXPLAIN PARTITIONS SELECT ...' and if on 5.6 also an optimizer trace for the query, then it will be easier to see how the optimizer came up with the plan. See more about it in the manual, but typically it is http://dev.mysql.com/doc/internals/en/optimizer-tracing-typical-usage.html
