partitioning and compression efficiency

Hello,

When I compress a table that is partitioned by linear hash, I get a substantial benefit, size ratio is 3.63. When I alter the table to partition it by key (which is what we prefer in this case) the benefit drops to a negligible ratio 1.17.

Is there an explanation for this?

Thanks,
George
