Relatively large database.. search takes a verry long time

Hello,
I have a pretty large database (about 5 gb) and most of it is text, I added a fulltext index and changed the select from like to match but it still takes a long time to search (several minutes) for just one user, I dont even want to think of the situation where several users are searching at the same time.

The database is destinated only for selects.. no updates are made so my question would be: is there a way to put the entire database into ram, like on a ramdisk and if so, what system would I need, now Im using suse linux with 2gb of ram, could I instal a high enough amount of ram to be able to create a ramdisk large enough (6gb) so that the entire db would fit on it?

Thanks
