Full text search with content and tags.

I've been looking at full text search and various content related websites.

My understanding is, content sites allow you to use tags to tag the content, this may also be used to link related articles at the bottom.

However, I want to know if they still use full text on the content itself? Isn't that more reliable? Or do they do both?

If so, how do they do both. I want to know how to use mysql full text searching for the content + tags, and how do they work with each other to implement a greater search quality for content websites.
