I saw something similar done with an informix database (Standard Engine) years ago. Database was left on (physical) disk, but the indexes were loaded into a ramdisk.

The performance gain was nothing short of incredible (like 50 times gain or something stupid). It accessed the data pointers (foudn the data) at lightning speed, but also freed the physical disks up to simply deliver data rather than burden them with the seondary taske of "finding where to go - and THEN going there"

Can this by done with any of the MySQL engines?
