You'll just have to roll your own.

I wonder what the reason is for this curious anomaly? It feels like one of those things that makes perfect sense from the mysql programmer's end but, for user's, having to deal with arbitrary quirks is nasty.

IMO it makes the full-text search virtually unusable. You have to offer partial-word search options and you have to rank results. I won't say anything about three letter words.
